Lowestoft Lighthouse

The red and white striped tower has been guiding ships into Lowestoft harbour since 1874, and it's still one of the town's most recognisable landmarks. You can't miss it - it stands bang on the seafront, a proper statement of Victorian engineering that's weathered everything the North Sea can throw at it.

It's a straightforward visit, really. The lighthouse itself isn't generally open to the public for climbing, so you're looking at an external viewing experience rather than an indoor attraction. That said, the location is excellent - walk around the base, catch the views across the harbour, and get your photos in. On a clear day you can see right along the coast. The surrounding seafront area has been developed over the years, so there's usually cafes and shops nearby if you need refreshment.

This works best for history enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates industrial architecture. Kids might enjoy spotting it from the beach or taking pictures, but they won't be entertained for hours. The real appeal is using it as a focal point for a seaside wander - combine it with a walk along the prom, a visit to the nearby beach at Pakefield, or one of the holiday parks like Azure Seas or Parkdean Resorts if you're basing yourself in the area.

Allow twenty minutes to half an hour for the lighthouse itself, longer if you factor in the wider seafront exploration. Best visited on a decent weather day when the light actually catches the paintwork properly.
