Lower Wood

Lower Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Bourton-on-the-Water, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow meander rather than a quick tick-box visit. The woodland here is dense enough to feel genuinely secluded - you won't hear the village once you're in among the trees. Paths wind through mixed woodland with decent stretches of open walking, and if you time it right in spring or early autumn, the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely.

It's ideal for families with older kids who can handle uneven ground without complaining. Young children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, though the woodland streams scattered about usually hold their attention for a while. Walkers will get a solid two-hour circuit out of it if they're in no hurry; there's nothing strenuous about it, just proper woodland exercise.

Free to access and no time limits to speak of, which means you can arrive whenever suits your schedule. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter. Allow at least an hour minimum, though two hours gives you time to actually enjoy it rather than just tick it off.

Perfect for breaking up a glamping stay at one of the nearby parks like Cotswolds Meadow or Bluewood Lodges - both within five miles and decent bases for exploring this corner of Oxfordshire. It's not dramatic or famous, but that's rather the point. If you want woodland without crowds or gift shops, this delivers.
