Lower Earlswood Lake

The lake sits quietly just outside Crawley, a proper working reservoir that's somehow become one of Sussex's better spots for a walk without any fuss. You get a clear loop around the water - takes about forty minutes if you dawdle - with decent views across the lake and enough trees to make it feel removed from the suburban sprawl nearby.

It's best for people who want fresh air and a bit of gentle movement rather than drama. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the flat paths; older walkers might find it a touch dull compared to what's on offer elsewhere in Sussex. The real appeal is that it's free, easily accessed, and doesn't require much planning. Birds here are decent too if you've brought binoculars.

Go early on weekends to avoid the joggers and dog walkers who've clearly worked out the same trick. Summer's pleasant but the water itself won't tempt you - it's a reservoir, not a bathing spot. Winter can feel bleak, though that keeps the crowds down.

If you're staying at Gatwick Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this makes a solid evening wander before dinner. Don't expect it to fill a whole day, but as part of a broader Sussex week it works as a quick recharge. The walk won't challenge anyone, which is either the point or a drawback depending on what you're after.
