Low Park Wood

Just outside Kendal, Low Park Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a modest stretch of mixed woodland that works perfectly as a morning walk if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. There's nothing grand about it. No visitor centre, no café, no manicured trails with interpretation boards. It's simply trees, paths, and space to breathe.

Walkers will appreciate the quiet. The woodland is dense enough to feel properly away from things, yet close enough to Kendal that you're never more than twenty minutes from civilisation. It's ideal if you've got kids who need a leg-stretch after a long drive, or if you're between bigger attractions in the Lake District and fancy something low-key. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no rush.

The best time is autumn, when the leaf cover turns the whole place into something rather special - golden light filtering through, the ground properly carpeted. Spring's decent too. Summer gets muggy under all those trees, and winter can be muddy underfoot.

If you're staying at Kendal Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's virtually on your doorstep. Even from the slightly further parks like The Ashes or Fell End, it's a short drive. Don't expect drama - that's what the proper fells are for. But if you want a gentle woodland amble without driving halfway across Cumbria, this does the job.
