Lovers Leap

The view from Lovers Leap really does stop you mid-stride. You're standing on a proper outcrop overlooking Stirling, with the castle dominating the skyline to one side and the Forth Valley spreading out below like something from a Victorian painting. It's the sort of place that makes sense of why people walked miles just to stand somewhere high and look around.

The legend attached to it - young lovers leaping to their deaths - is the usual melodramatic Scottish fare, but honestly, who cares. You're here for the panorama, not the ghost story. On a clear day you can see properly far. On a grey one, which is most days, the mist rolling in and out of the valley has its own appeal.

It's a short walk from Stirling town centre, though the final stretch is steeper than you might expect. Allow twenty minutes from the carpark if you're taking it steady, less if you're young and keen. No facilities up here, so bring water. Perfectly free, no gates or entrance fees.

Works best if you're already in the area visiting Stirling Castle - it's close enough to tag on without major detour. If you're staying at The WHW Hotel & Campsite down towards Glasgow, it's worth the drive up for an hour's exploration. Not somewhere you'd plan a day around, but genuinely worthwhile if you're in Stirling anyway. Families with primary-aged kids will manage fine; teenagers might find it a bit thin on action.
