Lovell Telescope

You'll spot it from miles away - a vast white dish pointing skyward, incongruously massive against the Cheshire flatlands. The Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank is one of those landmarks that stops you dead. Built in 1957, it's still the third-largest steerable radio telescope in the world, and it genuinely looks like something from a 1950s sci-fi film.

The site itself is operating research facility rather than a tourist attraction in the traditional sense, so don't expect theme park bells and whistles. What you get is the chance to stand in front of something genuinely significant - a working piece of scientific history that's been listening to space for nearly seventy years. The scale alone is worth the trip. It's 250 feet across. That's hard to grasp until you're actually standing beneath it.

Visitor facilities exist but are modest. You can walk around the grounds and photograph the structure from various angles; the engineering is genuinely striking. It's free to look at from the perimeter, though there may be charges for closer access or guided tours - worth checking ahead. Allow an hour or so if you're just viewing from outside, longer if the visitor centre is open.

For families, it appeals most to the scientifically curious rather than young children after a full day out. Walkers will find it a decent focal point for a stroll across the Cheshire countryside. From Knutsford it's a short drive, and several caravan parks sit within a few miles - Royal Vale and Woodlands Park are both close enough for a half-day excursion.
