Loughnaaree

The water at Loughnaaree sits quiet and still, ringed by gentle hills that rise up from the southern shore. It's a modest lake by any measure - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll stop you in your tracks from across the valley - but that's rather the point. You come here to decompress, not to gawp.

It's the sort of place walkers and fishermen know well, less so the casual tourist trade. The shoreline offers decent paths if you fancy a circuit, and the water's clean enough for a swim if you're brave - though I'd check the temperature first. Bird watchers occasionally pitch up here too. The surrounding countryside is properly rural Fermanagh and Omagh territory: rolling fields, forestry, not a gift shop in sight.

You won't need more than an hour or two unless you're planning a proper hike or settling in with a rod. It's free to visit, naturally. Spring and early summer are when it looks best - the grass is vivid and the light sits well. Winter can feel a touch bleak, though that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're after solitude.
