Lough Patrick

You're looking at proper lake country here. Lough Patrick sits just outside Newry, a sizeable body of water that draws walkers, anglers, and anyone after a bit of peace without the crowds. The water itself is calm and reflective most days - perfect for photographs if you time it right, though the sky over County Down can turn moody without warning.

What you actually do depends what you're after. Walkers have decent paths around the shoreline, nothing taxing but enough distance to justify the trip. The fishing community takes it seriously - pike and trout are the draw, so expect to see folk with rods set up along quieter stretches. If you're not an angler and just want somewhere to sit with a coffee and watch the water, there are spots for that too, though facilities are basic.

This works well as a half-day outing if you're staying nearby - say, at somewhere like Hilltop Hideaway just down the road. Bring proper waterproofs because the weather changes fast. The walk itself takes two to three hours depending on how much of the shoreline you fancy, so pace yourself. Kids might find it a bit slow if they're after action, but teenagers who like a bit of nature will get on fine.

Free to visit, no entrance fees that I'm aware of. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and the place feels less exposed. It's the kind of spot that rewards you for turning up, rather than a tick-box attraction.
