Lough Meenadooey

The water here is absolutely still most mornings, a sheet of grey-blue that reflects the surrounding hills so perfectly you'd swear you were looking at a photograph twice over. Lough Meenadooey sits in the borderlands between Fermanagh and Omagh, and it's the sort of place that rewards getting up early before the wind picks up and the trout fishermen arrive.

It's a proper working lake rather than a tourist attraction in the conventional sense. You won't find cafes or visitor centres or any of that nonsense - just access to the water and the landscape that shaped it. Walkers come here to loop the shoreline, which takes the best part of two hours depending on how many times you stop to stare at nothing in particular. Fishing types are the bread and butter, though, especially in spring and autumn. The trout fishing is taken seriously.

The nearest town is Omagh, about forty minutes away, which gives you some sense of how remote this feels. It's free to access, and there's no real infrastructure, so you need to be self-sufficient. Bring binoculars for the birdlife. There's nothing showy about it, but that's precisely why it works.
