Looe Island Nature Reserve (managed access only)

Getting out to Looe Island means booking ahead - this isn't a drop-in sort of place. The nature reserve operates on managed access only, which keeps the island properly protected rather than trampled to death by day-trippers. You'll need to arrange your visit in advance, but it's worth the planning because what you get is genuinely unspoiled.

The island itself sits just offshore from Looe town and hosts a working seabird and seal sanctuary. Depending on the season, you might see razorbills, guillemots, cormorants, or grey seals hauled out on the rocks. It's the kind of place where you're guaranteed to see something living and wild, not a tame attraction pretending to be nature. The boat journey out is half the experience - you're literally stepping away from the mainland into somewhere that operates by different rules.

This suits serious wildlife watchers more than casual families. Young kids might find it frustrating if they can't touch or get close to the animals, and an hour or so usually does it unless you're genuinely into birdwatching.
