Longstone Manor (Medieval Ruin)

The stones are still standing, which is rather the point. Longstone Manor sprawls across Devon moorland near Plymouth as little more than weathered walls and scattered rubble, but that's exactly what draws people here - it's archaeology you can actually walk around, not peek at through glass.

What remains are the foundations and partial walls of a medieval manor house, stripped back to bare essentials by centuries of neglect and the elements. You won't find a gift shop or interpretive panels. You get the ruin itself, moorland views, and the satisfaction of working out what you're looking at from pure observation. Walkers love it because it sits within easy reach of decent footpaths, and history types will spend a good hour tracing room layouts and wondering about the people who lived here five hundred years ago.

Kids tend to tire quickly unless they're into clambering over stones and making up stories about medieval life. Realistically, allow forty-five minutes to an hour, more if you're the contemplative type or keen on photography. There's no charge and no facilities, so bring water.

It slots well into a Dartmoor-focused holiday. Langstone Manor Holiday Park sits just under four miles away, while Dartmoor Domes at five miles offers glamping if you want something different. Both put you within striking distance of Plymouth and the moor proper, making Longstone Manor a straightforward detour rather than a special journey. Winter visits are atmospheric but muddy; spring and summer far more pleasant underfoot.
