Long Plantation

The woodland around Long Plantation feels properly quiet - the sort of place where you notice birdsong more than you'd expect. It's a genuine working forest just outside Mansfield, not some manicured nature trail, which means it's got real character: dense conifers mixed with older hardwoods, muddy paths that genuinely test your boots, and the kind of silence you don't find near town centres.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's no visitor centre or cafe nonsense here - you're just getting into the trees and following whatever paths appeal to you. Families with older kids who can manage uneven ground will be fine; younger ones might find it a bit relentless if they're after playground-style entertainment. The forest sits within reach of Clumber Park, which is only a couple of miles away, so you could stack a visit here with time at the National Trust estate if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Clumber Park Lodges or the Caravan Club site are both within easy distance.

Timing-wise, allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper walk, less if you're just poking about. Spring brings bluebells; autumn is admittedly prettier. Check conditions before you go - these paths get boggy. There's no admission charge that we can find, which is one less thing to worry about. It's worth the detour if you're in the area and you actually like forests rather than just the idea of them.
