Long Knoll

Long Knoll isn't a dramatic climb - it's a gentle rise on the edge of Warminster that rewards you with proper views across Somerset without demanding your knees in return. The peak itself is modest in height but sits just right to frame the surrounding countryside, and on a clear day you can pick out features across the Wiltshire downs.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place you'd loop into a longer ramble rather than drive out specially for, though if you're camping at one of the holiday parks near Longleat - and there are several decent options within five miles - it makes a solid morning outing. Expect to spend an hour here at a relaxed pace, including time to sit and let your eyes wander.

The terrain is straightforward, making it family-friendly if your kids are reasonably steady on their feet, though there's nothing to grip them once they're there. Bring a map or download the route first - Long Knoll isn't the sort of spot that's signposted all over.

Timing matters. Early morning clears the head before a day at Longleat itself, or late afternoon when the light softens everything. Avoid midday if you can - the exposure is real, and shelter is thin on the ground. It's free, obviously, and always accessible. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a Park holiday in the area.
