Long Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Long Copse sits just outside Emsworth in West Sussex and offers the kind of quiet forest ramble that locals know about but tourists often miss. It's mixed woodland - ancient-looking oaks, birches, and undergrowth thick enough that you feel genuinely away from it all, even though you're only minutes from town.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you want to stretch your legs through Sussex forest without crowds or visitor centres, this delivers. There are no grand vistas or marked attractions, just paths that wind through the trees and occasional clearings where light breaks through properly. Twenty minutes or an hour - take what you need. Bird watchers come early. Families with young walkers will find it manageable, though it's not a destination you'd drive far to reach.

Worth knowing: there's no obvious car park or facilities that I could find, and it reads as working woodland rather than managed public space. That's partly what makes it appealing - no admission fee nonsense, no visitor infrastructure to dodge.
