Long Coppice

The walk through Long Coppice takes you into proper woodland - the sort of place where you actually feel removed from things, even though Dorchester's only a few miles away. It's a mixed forest with a decent network of paths threading through, nothing too ambitious but enough variety to keep you moving for a good hour or two without feeling like you're going in circles.

What strikes you first is how quiet it gets once you're in among the trees. The paths are well-trodden, so navigation isn't an issue, and there's genuine woodland floor underfoot - leaf litter, the occasional muddy patch after rain. You'll see a mix of broadleaf and conifers, which means it doesn't feel monotonous. Local dog walkers clearly know this spot well, and families with younger kids can manage the terrain without drama.

It's less about dramatic views or historical landmarks and more about getting into the green for a bit. The sort of place you'd fit into a wider Dorset walking loop - Litton Lakes is barely two miles away if you're basing yourself at one of the holiday parks nearby. Worth combining with a Dorchester wander rather than treating it as a destination in itself.

Free access, as far as I can tell, and there's proper value in just turning up with decent boots and an hour to spare. Go midweek if you can - weekends pull in the usual foot traffic. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's exactly what a local woodland should be.
