Lodge Lake sits just outside Milton Keynes, a proper little water feature that catches most people by surprise given how built-up the surrounding area is. It's the sort of place where you can actually see wildlife - swans, ducks, the occasional heron if you're lucky and quiet enough. The walk around it takes a good hour without rushing, with decent paths on both sides and plenty of spots to stop and watch the water.

This is ideal for families who need a break from theme parks and shopping centres. Kids won't spend all day here - it's not that kind of attraction - but an hour or ninety minutes of fresh air and water-watching does the trick nicely, especially if you've got young ones who like spotting birds. Dog walkers absolutely love it, which tells you the paths are decent and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Access appears to be free, though facilities aren't obvious from here. Worth arriving with a packed lunch and making an afternoon of it rather than expecting cafes and loos. The lake sits within reasonable distance of several local parks - Gullivers Campsite is barely 2.5 miles away, which makes this a natural add-on to a longer stay in the area. Even The Old Dairy Farm Camping at 5.7 miles is close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere.

Go early if you want peace and quiet. By mid-afternoon it can get fairly busy with local dog walkers and families. The real draw here isn't spectacle - it's a genuine bit of countryside that somehow survived the Milton Keynes sprawl.
