Lodge Hill

The woodland at Lodge Hill, just outside Burton-on-Trent, is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick lap. You get a mix of broadleaf and conifer forest - nothing desperately wild, but genuinely pleasant if you're after some green time without heading into the Peak District proper. The walking is straightforward enough. Paths wind through decent-sized trees and the undergrowth isn't too dense, so you won't feel like you're hacking through jungle. In spring the bluebells come through nicely. Summer's when it gets a bit muggy and the flies are keen, so autumn's probably the sweet spot - crisp air, fewer insects, and you might spot the odd deer if you're quiet.

It's a solid family spot if your kids are the type who'll amble along without constantly asking how much further. Proper walkers might find it a tad short for a full day's outing, but it works well as a morning leg if you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - Lane Tree Hideaways is only a few miles away and perfect if you want woodland plus accommodation sorted. The forest isn't dramatic or unusual enough to demand a special trip from across the region, but for Burton folk or anyone staying locally, it's well worth an hour or two.
