Locust Coppice

Walking into Locust Coppice feels like stepping into proper old-growth woodland - the kind where mature trees block out enough light to keep things cool even on warm days. This Gloucestershire forest, just outside Malvern, is the sort of place you wander rather than tick off a checklist. There are trails threading through mixed woodland, plenty of space to just sit on a log and listen, and absolutely no crowds. It's free to access and costs nothing, which helps.

Walkers will get the most from it. This isn't a destination for young children who need constant stimulation - you'll lose them after twenty minutes in a woodland with no obvious attractions. But if you've got school-age kids who can ramble for an hour or so, or you're after a proper peaceful walk, Locust Coppice delivers. Allow between forty minutes and two hours depending on which routes you fancy.

It works well as a morning walk if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Up Sticks or Swallowfields are both within easy reach at three miles or so. The forest sits naturally into a Malvern-area break, especially if you're combining it with walks on the Malvern Hills themselves or exploring the town. Spring and autumn are lovely here, though winter can get muddy underfoot. Summer's warm enough that the shade becomes genuinely welcome. Check conditions before you go - there's not much infrastructure, so proper boots make sense.
