Berth Hill

Standing at 377 metres, this modest summit on the Gloucestershire-Worcestershire border rewards climbers with proper views across the Severn Vale. You'll tackle a decent uphill slog through woodland and open grassland, but nothing too taxing for anyone with reasonable fitness.

Walkers will find this a cracking half-day adventure, especially when combined with nearby Malvern Hills for a longer ramble. The approach from the Gloucestershire side offers the most interesting route, winding through mixed woodland before emerging onto the grassy top. On clear days, you can spot the Cotswolds rolling away to the east.

Families with older children will manage the climb well enough, though younger ones might find it a bit much. Allow two to three hours for a leisurely ascent and descent, longer if you're making it part of a ridge walk. Best tackled in spring or autumn when the woodland shows its colours and the muddy patches have dried out.

For those staying at one of the holiday parks around Malvern, it makes an excellent morning expedition before heading back for lunch. The car parks near Malvern town centre provide the easiest starting points, and you'll work up enough of an appetite to justify a proper pub meal afterwards.
