Lockwood Viaduct

Standing beneath Lockwood Viaduct is like being dwarfed by something genuinely Victorian and proper impressive. This stone railway bridge strides across the Holme Valley near Holmfirth with 19 arches in perfect formation, each one a small masterpiece of 19th-century engineering. Built in 1888, it carries the Penistone line over a deep wooded ravine, and the scale of it hits you immediately - towering, unapologetic Victorian infrastructure that doesn't apologise for taking up space.

The best views are from the footpath underneath, where you can really appreciate the engineering. Walk alongside the river and look up; the stonework is immaculate, barely weathered despite 135 years of Yorkshire rain and winter. It's the kind of thing that makes you appreciate what Victorian engineers could do without computers.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - you can't go inside or climb it - but it's a cracking spot to include on a longer ramble through the Holme Valley. Allow 20 minutes for a proper look and a few photographs. The surrounding countryside is lovely, especially in autumn when the wooded slopes turn gold.

Whitegate Leisure, slightly further afield, offers another solid base. Free to view, no time restrictions, and best visited when dry underfoot so you can properly explore the riverside paths beneath it.
