Lock Wood Island

The Thames oxbow loop at Lockwood Island feels almost accidental - a proper woodland pocket where the river doubles back on itself, leaving this patch of ancient oaks and beech stranded in a gentle crescent. It's not the kind of place that announces itself loudly. You're more likely to stumble upon it while wandering the towpath from Oxford than actively seek it out, which is precisely why it works.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. The island itself is a modest woodland - perhaps thirty minutes to loop the perimeter if you linger - but it's the kind of spot that rewards poking about. The trees are genuinely old, the ground soft with decades of leaf litter, and in spring the bluebells arrive in proper sheets of blue. The river views change as you work your way around, and there's something satisfying about being completely surrounded by water with nothing but birdsong for company.

Access is free and straightforward from the Thames Path, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet. Best visited autumn through early summer, when the insect hum doesn't drive you to distraction and you can actually hear yourself think. Winter works too - the bare branches open up sight lines across the water toward the Chilterns.

If you're based at Benson Waterfront six miles south, it's an easy afternoon push upstream. Not life-changing, but genuinely peaceful - the sort of detour that makes a bank holiday walk feel properly unhurried rather than ticked off.
