Lochan Smuirneach

The walk to Lochan Smuirneach takes you into proper Highland terrain - moorland and mountain views that feel genuinely remote despite being within striking distance of Ullapool. It's a modest loch, to be honest, but that's rather the point. You're not fighting crowds here or queuing for views.

The approach winds through open country with Sgurr Breac looming nearby. On a clear day the light on the water is something special - glassy and reflective, with the peaks reflected back at you. Allow a couple of hours for the walk depending on your fitness and how long you want to linger. It's not a strenuous hike, more a proper ramble with genuine Highland character.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this. It's the sort of place where you might see red grouse or golden eagles if you're lucky and quiet enough. Families with younger kids might find the distance a bit much - it's not a destination you can knock off in twenty minutes.

The nearest proper base is Ullapool, a working fishing town with real character about four miles away. Port A Bhaigh Campsite is a solid option if you're looking to plant yourself for a few nights and explore the area. The loch works perfectly as a day excursion from there - gives you something specific to aim for rather than just wandering. No facilities at the loch itself, so bring what you need.
