Lochan na Fola

You'll find this small loch tucked into the hills above Kinlochleven, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort without demanding a full day's commitment. The walk in takes roughly 45 minutes depending on fitness, climbing steadily through moorland with the water coming into view as you crest the ridge. Once there, it's genuinely peaceful - just open water, hills, and the sound of wind. No café, no facilities, no crowds.

The loch itself is modest in size but sits in proper Highland scenery. On a clear day the reflection work is excellent if you're into photography. Walkers will get the most out of this, particularly those already tackling the West Highland Way or exploring Kinlochleven's other routes. It's not a destination on its own, but rather a fine addition to a longer outing in the area.

Timing matters. Morning light is better, and you'll want dry weather for the path. Allow two to three hours round trip, though the fit can do it quicker. It's completely free and open year-round, though winter brings obvious challenges.

If you're based at Red Squirrel Campsite Scotland - the better-rated option of the two nearby parks - this makes a solid half-day walk from camp. Blackwater Hostel's closer but smaller. Either way, Lochan na Fola slots into a wider Highland itinerary rather than standing alone. Worth the trek if you're already in Kinlochleven, less so as a sole reason to visit.
