Lochan Lairig Cheile

The walk down to Lochan Lairig Cheile catches most people off guard with how quietly beautiful it is. This small loch sits in a narrow glen between high hills just north of Lochearnhead, and you'll need to graft a bit to reach it - there's no road, just a decent footpath that takes the better part of an hour from the village. The reward is a proper Highland loch experience without the crowds of Loch Earn itself, which sits nearby. The water is dark and still, surrounded by steep slopes covered in heather and rough grass, and on a clear day you can see right across to the far peaks. It's a walk rather than a drive-and-stare sort of place, which is why most casual tourists miss it entirely.

The path itself is the main draw here. Walkers with reasonable fitness will find it manageable, though it's steep in sections and boggy after rain. Families with older kids might manage it, but younger ones could struggle with the distance and terrain - best save this for ages eight and up, really. Allow two to three hours return if you're in no hurry and want to sit by the water for a bit.

If you're staying at Balquhidder Braes Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. It pairs well with exploring Loch Tay Highland Lodges area too, as you're in proper walking country either way. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring more boot-traffic, though it's never rammed. Winter's beautiful here but the weather turns foul quickly, so spring through early autumn is your window.
