Lochan Geal

The walk to Lochan Geal takes you through proper Cairngorms terrain, away from the main tourist drag around Aviemore. It's a small, dark loch surrounded by ancient Caledonian forest - the kind of place that makes you understand why people move to the Highlands and never leave.

You're looking at roughly an hour's walk from the nearest carpark, depending on which route you take. The path meanders through Scots pine and birch, crossing burns that run clean and fast. The loch itself isn't vast - it's intimate, really - but that's rather the point. On a clear day the reflections are exceptional. On a moody day, which is most days up here, it's atmospheric enough to make you forget there's a ski resort just down the road.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy walking, not just Instagram stops. If your family expects immediate gratification, they'll grumble about the approach and want to turn back after ten minutes. Proper hill-goers and photographers will find it worth the effort. Spring and early summer are best - the water's clearer and the midges haven't fully mobilised yet.

It's free, obviously, being wild Highland landscape. Allow half a day if you're taking your time and want to sit for a bit.
