Lochan Creag nan Caorann

High up in the hills between Arrochar and Tyndrum sits a proper mountain loch that most people thunder past without noticing. Lochan Creag nan Caorann isn't big - you could walk round it in under an hour - but it's the kind of place that catches you off guard with how wild it feels.

The loch itself is dark water hemmed in by steep slopes, with the kind of views that make you understand why people get obsessed with Scottish landscape photography. On a clear day you can see across the glens. When it's misty, which is often, the whole thing feels properly atmospheric - almost moody.

This is really a walker's spot rather than somewhere to lounge about. You'll need decent boots and an hour or two minimum. Families with young kids might find the terrain a bit much, but anyone comfortable on moorland will take it in their stride. The approach from Arrochar side is the most straightforward route, though it's not marked with much fanfare.

If you're camped at Beinglas nearby - which is rough and ready but well-positioned - this makes a cracking afternoon expedition. Tyndrum Holiday Park is closer to the southern approach if you're based there. Go early to avoid the midges in summer, and always check conditions: these hills change mood quickly.

It won't steal hours from your day, but it's the kind of detour that justifies a slow park holiday in this corner of Stirling.
