Lochan a Mhadaidh

A small lochan tucked into the hills near Arrochar, this one rewards you more for the walk than the destination itself. The water sits quietly in moorland terrain - nothing dramatic, just honest Scottish scenery that feels properly remote despite being only a few miles from civilisation.

You'll find the appeal here is less about lounging by the shore and more about the approach. It's a decent leg-stretcher if you're based at Beinglas Campsite or staying in the area - the walk takes a couple of hours depending on your route and fitness. The lochan itself is small enough that you won't linger for hours, but it's a good reason to get boots on and move through the landscape.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find the walk a bit of a slog for what amounts to a modest pool of water at the end of it. History buffs won't find much here - it's nature pure and simple, which is precisely the point.

There's no facility to speak of - bring what you need. The real draw is the solitude and the sense of being properly off the beaten track, which you don't always get this close to Arrochar. Midweek visits will be quieter than weekends. The ground can be boggy depending on weather, so good footwear is essential.
