Lochan a Choin Uire

The walk to Lochan a Choin Uire rewards you with a proper Scottish Highland loch that feels genuinely remote, despite being only a few miles from Inverness. It's a small mountain lake - nothing dramatic from the road, but once you're there, surrounded by heather and rough moorland, you understand why people make the effort.

The lochan itself is maybe a kilometre across, dark water reflecting whatever sky you've got that day. There's no visitor centre, no café, no obvious facilities. What you get is quiet. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward hike in - allow a couple of hours return, depending on fitness and how often you stop to take photos. The terrain's rough but not technical. Families might find it a slog if the kids are young, but older children who don't mind boggy ground will be fine.

Timing matters. Early morning in summer is genuinely special, or late afternoon if you've got decent weather. Midges can be foul in July and August if there's no breeze. Winter's clearer but colder, obviously.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Loch Ness Holiday Park is closest at just 2.4 miles - this makes a solid half-day excursion. It's not a headline attraction, but it's the kind of place that justifies a Highlands trip. You won't fight crowds. You won't see Instagram crowds. You'll just see a loch, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
