Loch Spigniv

The water at Loch Spigniv sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the surrounding hills like a dark mirror. It's a modest loch by Scottish standards - nothing that'll leave your jaw on the floor - but that's rather the point. You get the Highland atmosphere without the tourist crowds you'd find at Loch Lomond or Katrine.

The loch itself is the draw here. It's a straightforward walk from Crianlarich, the nearest proper town, and most visitors come for gentle rambling around the shoreline or to have a crack at fishing if you're into that sort of thing. The water's cold enough to make you think twice about swimming, but on a clear day the views back towards the Tyndrum hills are genuinely lovely. Families with young walkers should manage it fine - the terrain's not demanding and there's something satisfying about a loch walk that doesn't require proper hiking boots and a packed lunch. History types might find the surrounding landscape interesting enough, though the loch itself doesn't come with much of a story attached.
