Loch Sgeireach

Water this dark and still feels almost prehistoric. Loch Sgeireach sits in the Highland landscape north of Ullapool like something the landscape forgot to finish - remote, quiet, and honestly a bit moody depending on the weather.

It's a proper walk to get there rather than a drive-up spot, which means the crowds thin out fast. The loch itself is small compared to some of the bigger water bodies in the Highlands, but that's rather the point. You get the drama without the tour buses. The water's the colour of strong tea, ringed by moorland that goes on forever.

Walkers will find this worthwhile - it's the kind of place that rewards the effort to get there. Families with older kids won't struggle with access, though pushchairs would be a non-starter. History buffs might appreciate the raw, untouched feel of the landscape, though there aren't visitor facilities or interpretive signs to speak of.

If you're based at Port a Bhaigh Campsite just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing. Take proper boots - the ground gets boggy - and pack waterproofs. The light here changes constantly, which sounds romantic but means you're basically always chasing better weather. Allow a few hours if you're making a proper day of it rather than a quick detour. It's free, naturally, and open whenever you fancy turning up.
