Loch Osgaig

The water at Loch Osgaig sits absolutely still most days, reflecting the surrounding hills like dark glass. It's a proper remote spot in the Highlands, the kind of place where you'll hear nothing but wind and the occasional eagle call. The loch itself is small and uncluttered - no visitor centre, no facilities, no crowds. Just water, heather, and mountains.

What draws people here is the fishing, mainly. Brown trout are decent if you know what you're doing, and the isolation means you won't be jostling for space with other anglers. Walkers find their way here too, though it's more of a destination for serious hikers than casual strollers. The terrain around it is rough and boggy in places, so proper boots matter.

Lying just a few miles from Ullapool, it's accessible enough without feeling touristy. Port a Bhaigh Campsite sits reasonably close by if you're basing yourself in the area - gives you somewhere warm to return to after a day in the elements. Summer's your best bet weather-wise, though Highland weather being what it is, rain isn't exactly guaranteed to hold off.

It won't suit everyone. Kids will likely find it dull unless they're genuinely into fishing or wild country walking. But if you want to stand somewhere genuinely quiet and untouched, this delivers. No grand views, no Instagram moments - just a working Highland loch doing its thing.
