Loch na Totaig

The loch sits tucked away in proper Highland terrain, about twenty minutes' drive south of Ullapool. It's not the kind of place you stumble upon by accident - you have to want to find it, which means most tourists miss it entirely. The water is dark and still, fringed with birch and pine, and on a clear day the reflections are genuinely excellent for photography. There's a small layby where you can pull in, and a rough track that picks its way down to the shore if you fancy a closer look. Allow an hour if you're treating it as a proper stop, longer if you've got the camera kit out. Walkers get the most from this one. The surrounding terrain offers decent paths through the moorland, and the loch makes a natural focal point for a half-day adventure. It's not a swimming spot unless you're genuinely hardy. The whole thing has an undisturbed, almost forgotten quality to it - no facilities, no crowds, just water and Highland quietness. If you're camping at Port a Bhaigh, which sits just down the road, this becomes a natural circuit walk or a peaceful afternoon detour between other activities. The drive in is half the appeal - narrow single-track roads with passing places, the kind of route that reminds you why Scotland's interior feels so remote.
