Loch na h-Eangaiche

A small loch tucked into the Highland landscape between Strathcarron and the coastal villages, Loch na h-Eangaiche isn't the kind of place you stumble upon by accident - you have to want to find it. The water sits quiet and dark, ringed by rough moorland and low hills that shift colour depending on the light and season. It's proper wild in the way many Highland lochs are, without the tourist infrastructure of the bigger waters.

You can walk around it or simply sit and watch the water. Walkers will find it worth the drive from Strathcarron, especially if you're after something off the main routes. The surrounding terrain is boggy in places and moorland in others, so boots matter. Photographers might find something interesting here when the light's right, but it's not a destination that demands hours - more a detour that pays off if you're in the area anyway.

The nearest proper base is Shieldaig Camping & Cabins, just over four miles down the road, which makes this an easy morning or afternoon excursion if you're staying in the region. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no entrance fee - just a loch and the landscape. Bring a packed lunch, proper footwear, and weather-appropriate kit. Go on a clear day if you can, otherwise the hills disappear into cloud and half the appeal vanishes. It's free, open year-round, and works well as part of a larger Highland walking itinerary rather than a standalone attraction.
