Loch na Guradh

The drive to Loch na Guradh from Strathcarron takes you through some proper wild Highland scenery, and that's half the appeal. This is a small, quiet loch that doesn't get mobbed with tourists - you'll likely have it mostly to yourself, which feels increasingly rare in Scotland these days.

It's a straightforward spot for a walk or a sit-down by the water. The loch itself is peaceful rather than dramatic, hemmed in by low hills and moorland. If you're into fishing or kayaking, locals fish here regularly enough that it's clearly accessible. For most visitors though, this is a gentle ramble-and-breathe kind of place - not a destination that'll take hours of your time, but excellent if you're staying nearby and fancy getting out of the cottage without heading to one of the bigger, busier lochs.

The nearest decent base is Shieldaig Camping & Cabins, about five miles away, which means you're close to proper amenities without feeling like you've left the back of beyond. The campsite itself gets solid reviews. If you're doing a Highland park holiday and want to break up the day with something low-key that won't drain your energy or your wallet, this works. Expect to spend an hour here maximum - it's the sort of place you stop at between bigger walks or on your way to somewhere else, rather than a day's main event. But that's rather the point of it.
