Loch na Dubh-bhruaich

Getting to Loch na Dubh-bhruaich means leaving the main road and heading into proper Highland territory near Strathcarron. It's a freshwater loch that feels genuinely remote - the kind of place where you actually hear silence.

The water itself is dark and still most days, ringed by steep hillsides that rise directly from the shore. There's no beach to speak of, no facilities, and that's precisely why it works. If you're after a walk, the shoreline path gives you decent views without being arduous. The surrounding landscape is rough moorland and heather - very Highland, very unpolished.

This isn't a destination that pulls crowds. History buffs might find local interest in the area's Gaelic heritage, but there's nothing formal to explore on site. Children will get restless unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy hiking and wild water views. Walkers and photographers who appreciate untouched scenery will find it worthwhile, though you'll want reasonable weather - when mist rolls in, the drama evaporates.

Allow an hour or two for a circuit walk if the ground isn't too boggy. There's no entrance fee because there's no infrastructure to maintain. Being only six miles from Shieldaig Camping & Cabins makes it a decent half-day break from a broader Highland park holiday. The road up is single track, so expect to reverse if you meet oncoming traffic. Late spring through early autumn is sensible - winter here gets bleak quickly.
