Loch na Deal-eich

There's something about Loch na Deal-eich that makes you understand why people come to the Highlands in the first place. It's a proper mountain loch - dark water, steep sides, the kind of place where light changes everything within minutes. The walk from Aviemore isn't long but it's got real purpose to it, taking you up into proper wild country without needing a technical map or specialist kit.

The loch sits in a glacial valley, hemmed in by ridges and old pine forest. On a clear day you can see the water reflecting everything back at you like a mirror. When it's grey - which, let's be honest, is most days - it turns moody and atmospheric. You're looking at something genuinely remote even though Aviemore's only a short drive away.

This works best for walkers who want something substantial without the full day commitment of a major peak. Families with confident legs will manage fine; young children might find it a bit of a slog. Photographers should come early or late in the day when the light's doing something interesting. A good two hours minimum if you're taking your time.

If you're staying at Dalraddy Holiday Park nearby, it makes a brilliant half-day outing. You're close enough to access it easily but far enough into the landscape that you've genuinely escaped. Worth the walk, though don't expect facilities - bring what you need and plan around the light.
