Loch na Craoibhe-caroruinn

The loch sits tucked into the Highland landscape near Strathcarron, a proper remote corner of Scotland where you're more likely to spot a golden eagle than another visitor. It's a freshwater loch - not massive, but genuinely beautiful in that understated way the Highlands do so well. The water reflects the hills above, and in autumn the colours are something special.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means you're getting the loch as it actually is rather than as a packaged experience. Walking around the shoreline takes time but rewards you with changing perspectives - some spots feel almost intimate, others open out across the water. Birdwatchers will have a field day here, and if you're after silence and space away from the Loch Ness crowds, this delivers it.

Really, this works best as part of a longer ramble through the area rather than a destination in itself. Shieldaig Camping & Cabins sits just 4.5 miles away and makes an excellent base - you could easily combine a morning here with walking further into the hills or heading to nearby lochs. The loch is free to access, naturally. Allow a couple of hours if you're going to properly explore the shoreline. Winter light is moody and dramatic; spring and early summer offer longer days for proper exploration.
