Loch na Caorach

The drive into Loch na Caorach takes you deep into proper Highland terrain, about forty minutes from Strathcarron if you're heading north. It's a remote spot - the kind of place where you'll likely have the water mostly to yourself, which is both the appeal and the slight drawback depending on what you're after.

The loch itself is modest in scale, ringed by steep hillsides that give it a closed-in feeling. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure here - no café, no car park with markings, just a quiet road that lets you pull over and look. The water is peaty and dark, reflecting the mountains above. In decent light it can look moody and atmospheric. In poor weather, which is frequent, it's frankly a bit bleak.

This works best for walkers and photographers rather than families wanting a proper outing. You're not swimming or doing much beyond standing around taking pictures or heading into the hills on foot. Allow thirty minutes to an hour maximum if you're just passing through. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms it, but plan accordingly - the days are short up here in winter.
