Loch Lundie

The water here is dark and still, hemmed in by steep hillsides that rise sharply from the shore. Loch Lundie sits tucked into the Highland landscape near Kyle of Lochalsh, and it's the sort of place that catches you off guard - not particularly famous, which is precisely why it works. You can walk the perimeter if you're keen, though the terrain is rough going in places and requires proper boots. Most visitors come for the fishing, which is decent enough, or simply to sit by the water and watch the light shift across the mountains. It's free, obviously, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring what you need. The nearest proper amenities are in Kyle of Lochalsh itself, a working port town that's actually rather charming. If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping Skye just down the road, Loch Lundie makes a solid morning outing before heading elsewhere. The walk takes around two hours if you're not rushing. It won't blow your mind - the drama here is understated rather than spectacular - but it's proper Highland landscape and honest. Not worth a special trip from miles away, but absolutely worth investigating if you're in the area anyway. Bring a thermos.
