Loch Losgainn

The water here is dead calm most mornings - mirror-like - which makes the surrounding hills look twice as dramatic as they probably are. Loch Losgainn sits in proper remote Highland territory, just inland from Ardgay, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out.

There's not much infrastructure and that's rather the point. No visitor centre, no tea room, no rows of parked cars. What you get is a quiet freshwater loch with decent walking around its perimeter, and if you're into fishing or kayaking, the water's yours to explore. The hills rise up steeply on the far shore - it's genuinely atmospheric on a grey day, which is most days.

Walkers will spend a solid two to three hours circling the loch if they're not rushing. It's well worth the effort if you're staying at Ardgay Glamping - only 4.5 miles away - and fancy a morning outing that doesn't involve a drive to somewhere more famous. This isn't a destination you'd travel two hours for, but it's absolutely worth knowing about if you're already in the area.

The real draw is the solitude. You might not see another soul. Bring waterproof layers because the weather rolls in fast, and a packed lunch because facilities are non-existent. Free to access and best visited between May and September when the midges are at least slightly less vindictive.
