Loch Iubhair

A quiet freshwater loch about six miles from Crianlarich, Loch Iubhair sits in rolling countryside that feels properly remote even though you're not far from civilization. The water is clear and dark, ringed by low hills and scattered trees - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers and fishing types get the most from it. There's no built infrastructure here, which is part of the appeal. You can circle the loch on foot in under an hour, though the paths aren't formal - just tracks that locals use. The views aren't dramatic in the way Ben Lomond is, but that's rather the point. It's the Scottish Lowlands doing what they do best: green, quiet, manageable.

If you're staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park, it's a straightforward drive north and makes a decent half-day outing. Bring wellies. The ground can be boggy after rain, and there are no facilities whatsoever - no cafe, no visitor centre, no car park in any formal sense. You'll find a rough verge where a handful of cars can pull over.

Best visited in spring or early summer when the midges are still sleeping. By August they're relentless. It won't keep you occupied for a full day, but as a morning walk between other Stirling activities, it's worth the detour. Don't expect a postcard moment. Expect peace.
