The water at Loch Insh sits cold and still, reflecting the Cairngorms like a mirror that's just been polished. This is where Aviemore comes to actually do something on the water rather than just talk about it. The loch itself is the thing - a proper Highland freshwater stretch that's deep enough and sheltered enough to make watersports genuinely work, not just photo ops.

You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, rowing boats, or sailing dinghies depending on the season and your nerve. The watersports centre runs lessons if you're starting from scratch, which most people are. A morning session costs less than a cinema trip and you'll have worked muscles you forgot existed. The views while you're out on the water beat anything you'll get from the shore - the mountains feel closer, the silence deeper.

This matters most if you're the type who needs to be doing something rather than just looking. Families with teenagers who can swim will get real value here. Young kids might find it a bit slow unless they're in a boat with an adult. On decent weather days in summer it gets busy, so arrive early or go mid-week.

If you're based at Dalraddy Holiday Park just down the road, Loch Insh is a natural half-day plan. It breaks up a week of forest walks without dragging you into Aviemore proper. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to get on the water. Bring a wind-breaker even in summer - that wind off the loch is genuinely sharp.
