Loch Imrich

A small, quiet loch in the Cairngorms that most visitors to the area completely miss. Loch Imrich sits near Newtonmore and offers proper Highland scenery without the crowds you'd find at Loch Ness or Loch Morlich. The water is dark and still most days, backed by proper mountains that feel genuinely remote even though you're only a short drive from civilisation.

You can walk round the loch - it takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace - or just pull off and sit by the water for an hour with a coffee. There's limited development around it, which is exactly the point. Families with young children will find the walk manageable, though there's not much to actually do once you're there beyond looking and breathing in the Scottish air.

It's free to visit and open year-round. Spring and autumn are lovely, though midges can be fierce in July and August if the wind drops. Winter brings a different kind of beauty - frost on the rocks, low light that catches the water properly.

If you're staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park or Laggan Glamping - both within twenty minutes - this is the sort of place you'd slip away to for an hour between other activities rather than make a full day of it. Walkers heading towards more substantial Cairngorm peaks might pass through. History buffs won't find much. But if you want to sit quietly beside actual Highland water without fighting for a parking space, Loch Imrich delivers.
