Loch Feur

The water at Loch Feur sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the surrounding hills like dark glass. It's a proper Highland loch without the crowds you'd find at Loch Maree or the other big draws - quiet, a bit remote, and all the better for it.

You'll find it a few miles south of Gairloch, tucked into the landscape where the road narrows and the hills close in. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no infrastructure. Just the loch itself - good for a walk round the shoreline if the mood takes you, or simply pulling over to look at it. Swimming's possible if you're hardy. Fishing too, if you've got the knowledge and the permits sorted.

This is one for people who actually like lochs rather than just ticking them off. Families after an easy afternoon activity might find it a touch underwhelming - there's no playground, no boats to rent, no ranger talks. Walkers and photographers, though, will see the appeal. The light changes constantly, and the solitude is genuine.

If you're staying at Sands Caravan & Camping near Gairloch - which is excellent, honestly - Loch Feur makes a decent morning stop before heading north. It's only three miles from base, and the drive itself through that landscape is worth doing. Allow an hour if you're walking, twenty minutes if you're just stopping for the view. No admission charge because there's nowhere to charge it. Bring a flask.
