Loch Dow

The water at Loch Dow sits absolutely still most days, mirroring the hills that rise around it like a perfect postcard you've seen a hundred times. It's a modest Scottish loch about four miles south of Newton Stewart, the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards anyone who bothers to find it.

The main draw is the walk. There's a decent path that loops around the loch - you're looking at a straightforward hour or so depending on pace and how often you stop to watch for red squirrels or pike breaking the surface. The surrounding forest (part of Galloway Forest's wider woodland network) gives you proper shelter from wind, which matters more than you'd think this far north. Photographer types will find decent vantage points, particularly on the eastern shore where the light hits well in late afternoon.

It's not somewhere that'll keep restless kids entertained for hours, but families doing a forest holiday at Galloway Forest Holiday Park nearby will find it a solid half-day destination combined with a picnic. Walkers passing through Dumfries & Galloway should slot it in without hesitation - the walk is easy enough that it doesn't demand peak fitness, just decent boots and reasonable weather.

Go mid-week if you can. Weekends draw the local fishing crowd, and the car park fills up properly. Spring and autumn offer the best light and fewest midges. Free to visit, naturally - it's just a loch with access rights.
