Loch Crunachdan

The water here is dark and still, ringed by rough Highland hills that climb steep from the shoreline. Loch Crunachdan sits quietly between Newtonmore and the deeper glens, the kind of place where you'll spot red deer on the slopes and hear nothing much except the wind coming off the water.

It's a short drive from Newtonmore - perhaps twenty minutes depending on which approach you take - making it a solid half-day option if you're staying in the area. The loch itself doesn't have formal facilities or marked paths around it, so this is more for walkers and landscape photographers than casual visitors after a tidy picnic spot. The banks are rough going, rocky and sometimes boggy, but that's rather the point. You get the genuine Highland experience without the crowds that dog Loch Ness.

The real appeal is the solitude and the quality of the light here. Early morning or late afternoon, when the sun catches the water at an angle, it's genuinely striking. Worth an hour's walk if you're in the mood for something off-beat. Bring proper boots - the ground is unforgiving - and go in decent weather; cloud can make the whole thing rather bleak.

If you're based at Laggan Glamping & Caravan/Motorhome Site five or so miles away, this works well as a morning venture before exploring the broader Cairngorms trails. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a Highland walking holiday.
