Loch Clair

The water at Loch Clair sits so still on a calm morning that you can't tell where the loch ends and the mountains begin. It's a proper Highland loch - the sort that makes you understand why people drive hours into the Highlands rather than stay on the coast.

There's not much to do here in the traditional sense. You walk to it, you stand there, you look at it. Some folk bring binoculars for the birdlife, others pack a picnic and settle in for an hour with the view. The surrounding hills close in tight, creating this almost amphitheatre effect that amplifies the quiet. Photography types will be plotting their light angles from mid-afternoon onwards.

It's a short drive from Gairloch, tucked away enough that you won't find tour coaches but accessible enough for a decent walk if you're staying at Sands Caravan & Camping nearby. The loch itself is free to visit, though the walk in takes about twenty minutes depending on which path you take. Go in spring or early autumn when midges aren't determined to ruin your afternoon.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's less a destination and more a waypoint on longer Highland routes. Families with young kids might find half an hour sufficient. But if you're after that moment where the Highlands feel genuinely remote and untamed, even from a short stroll, this delivers it without any fuss.
