Loch Caoldair

You'll find Loch Caoldair tucked into the Highland landscape near Newtonmore, a proper mountain loch with steep banks and dark water that reflects the surrounding hills. It's the sort of place that draws walkers and photographers rather than day-trippers looking for facilities - there's nothing much in terms of amenities, which is rather the point. The walk in is straightforward enough from the road, and once you're there, the views back towards the Monadhliath Mountains justify the effort. Allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with a short hike around the shoreline.

This isn't a destination on its own - you're not coming to sit by the water with a picnic and spending the afternoon. But if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks, particularly Laggan Glamping just three miles away, it makes a cracking morning or evening walk. Walkers will find it worth the detour; families with young children might find it a bit austere unless they're keen on the outdoors. The loch itself is fairly remote and quiet, which some will love and others will find rather bleak depending on the weather. Winter visits can be particularly atmospheric, though you'll need proper kit.

The real value here is how it fits into a broader exploration of the Newtonmore area. Pair it with walks around the Laggan region and you've got a solid few days of Highland activity. Invernahavon Caravan Park, five miles out, would serve as a comfortable base too.
