Loch Bad na h-Achlaise

The water here is so dark it's almost black, stretching out beneath mountains that seem to press down on it from all sides. Loch Bad na h-Achlaise sits tucked into the Highland landscape near Gairloch, properly remote and about as far from a manicured attraction as you'll get.

This is a loch for people who actually want to be outdoors rather than ticking boxes. There's no visitor centre, no café, no marked trails - you show up and find your own way around the shoreline. The walk in from the nearest road is straightforward enough, but it's the isolation that sells it. You'll likely have the place to yourself, which sounds lovely until you realize how utterly exposed you are to whatever weather decides to roll in.

Walkers and outdoor types will get genuine value here. Photographers might spend an afternoon chasing light across the water. Families with young kids? Honestly, not much happens. There's water, there are hills, and that's it. If you've got restless children expecting attractions or activities, save your time.

If you're camping at Sands just down the road - and it's a five-star spot - this makes a worthwhile morning excursion or an evening walk when the light's right. Allow a couple of hours including the walk in. Go in decent weather. The loch doesn't care about your schedule, and neither should you.
