Loch Ardinning

The water here is flat and dark, ringed by low hills that don't announce themselves loudly the way Scottish Highlands do. Loch Ardinning sits between Stirling and Glasgow, closer to the latter, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for.

It's genuinely peaceful. A short walk around the loch takes maybe an hour, depending on your pace and whether you stop to watch the water. The surrounding woodland is decent enough - nothing dramatic, but proper restorative if you've had enough of touring attractions. Families with younger kids will find it manageable; older ones might find it a touch dull if they're expecting white-water excitement.

There's a car park and access is free, which counts for something. The best light is late afternoon when the water picks up the sky. Midweek visits beat weekends by a country mile.

It won't occupy a full day, but that's rather the point - it's a break, not a destination.
